Mindless Merger

In symbiosis the mother and child are not psychologically differentiated. They act as a single unit. In early infancy, this is developmentally appropriate.

Problems only emerge if the child fails to eventually see themselves as separate from mother.

This is the fork in the road that leads to pathology, where the individual will unconsciously continue to seek the recreation of this dynamic to enable separateness where it had failed before.
